ABB and Aptus to introduce a revolutionary Home Automation System

A completely new home automation system will be introduced at the housing fairs of this summer in Kotka, Finland. The modern features of the system improve comfort and safety, and reduce energy consumption of the building. The attractive pricing of the system ensures every homebuilder can afford it. The system has been developed in co-operation between leading companies in the industry. Open interfaces ensure that the system opens new business opportunities to other companies as well.

Features of the system

Some functions of the system:

  •  Intelligent lighting control. It is easy to make modifications to lighting as the use or furniture of a room changes.
  •  Out of building -automation. When leaving the building, with a single push on a button the user can turn off all lighting, stove, water supply, desired wall sockets etc. This increases lifetime of lamps and reduces unnecessary use of power, while eliminating possibility of water damages.
  •  In addition to local control, electrical devices such as locks, lighting and wall sockets, can be controlled remotely over the Internet, with a remote controller, or a GSM phone.
  •  Heating control system, which saves energy by allowing individual control for each room of the building.
  •  An energy saving ventilation system may be integrated to the system.
  •  The browser interface of the system collects different technologies and user panels behind a single, easy-to-use user interface. Direct connection to Internet is optional, as the system may also be connected with a local PC or other device running browser software.

Technology

The system includes an intelligent switchboard made by ABB. This board combines the interfaces of various systems in the building - lighting, locking, heating, etc. - which have in the past required the use of separate systems and separate user interfaces. The backbone of the system is the Linet control network, a twisted pair cable network installed in the same pipes with mains conductors. Hundreds of electrical devices may be connected to and controlled with the system. Still the installation in the building keeps simple, benefiting from the use of modern networking technology,

Setting up and using the system is a straightforward and simple task, and does not require any special training or skills. Later modifications and expansions to the system are easy to carry out as well.

'The system has been developed by a network of companies working in different businesses, benefiting from Finnish know-how and the power of co-operation', said Mr. Kalevi Härkönen from Linet Oy. 'The resulting product is not a visionary experimentation but a concrete product, which truly improves comfort and safety of living, while lowering energy consumption of the building. The system is ready for delivery today, at a price every homebuilder can afford.'

Introduction

The system will be introduced to press on 6.2.2002 at the Safewood exhibition building at Kotka housing fair area.

The companies involved with the development and production of the system:

ABB Oy, LV Systems (www.abb.fi) has developed and manufactures the intelligent switch board, which contains interfaces to Internet and Linet networks, and user interfaces for web browsers, PDA's, and cellphones.

Aptus Sensible Electronics Oy (www.aptus-se.com) markets and supports installing of the system. Aptus also manufactures many of it's devices (e.g. lighting control pushbuttons).

Linet Oy (www.linet-network.com) develops and manufactures components for the local control network on which the system is based.

MG Innovations Oy (www.recyclingenergy.com) has developed the optional ventilation equipment of the system.

Muurlan Elektroniikka Oy (www.muurlanelektroniikka.fi) has developed heating control algorithms for the system.
